Netscape Messenger E-Mail Settings
for Netscape Communicator 4.5 - 4.7
On Windows 95/98/NT Computers MHTC.NET is used as an example and should be substituted for your Domain

1. To configure the e-mail settings for Netscape Communicator 4.5 - 4.7, you must first open Communicator program. Then click the "Edit" menu at the top of the program window, and choose "Preferences..." as shown below. That will open another window titled "Preferences." Proceed to step #2.

2.  In the "Preferences" window, shown below, click on "Identity" on the left-hand side of the window, which is a sub-category of "Mail & Newsgroups." After you click "Identity," you will see some e-mail-related settings appear on the right-hand side of the window, as shown below. In the blank labeled "Your name," type whatever name you would like to appear as the sender on out-going messages. In the blank labeled "Email address," type the customer's e-mail address in all lower-case characters. The rest of the items on the right-hand side of the window are optional. Proceed to step #3.

3.  Next, click on "Mail Servers" on the left-hand side of the "Preferences" window, which is a sub-category of "Mail & Newsgroups." (See below.) Then you will see some more e-mail-related settings appear on the right-hand side of the "Preferences" window. The "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" should be "mail.yourdomain.net" and the "Outgoing mail server user name" should be the customer's username. This should be typed in all lower-case characters. (See below.) There should already be a dot in the circle labeled "Never" regarding the use of SSL, as well as a default path listed in the blank labeled "Local mail directory." Then, look in the white box labeled "Incoming Mail Servers," and make sure you have only one e-mail account listed. It should look something like the one in the window pictured below. If there is not an account listed, add one by clicking the "Add..." button. If there is more than one account listed, remove the superfluous accounts using the "Delete" button on the right-hand side of the "Preferences" window. (Some customers with multiple e-mail boxes may deliberately wish to have more than one account listed here.) To configure the settings for the incoming mail server, click the "Edit..." button and proceed to step #4.

4.  Next, the "Mail Server Properties" window will appear. In this window, "Server Name" should be "mail.yourdomain.net" and "Server Type" should be "POP3 Server," exactly as shown below. The "User Name" field should contain the customer's username typed in all lower-case characters. The rest of the settings in this window are optional, although most customers like to put a check in the box labeled "Remember password." Click on the tab labeled "POP" at the top of the window, and proceed to step #5.

5.  In most cases, there should not be a check in the box labeled "Leave messages on server" (see below) unless perhaps the customer is using the program at a location other the location where they normally check their mail. Click the "OK" button, and proceed to step #6.

6.  Back in the "Preferences" window, click on "Newsgroup Servers," which is a sub-category of "Mail & Newsgroups," on the left-hand side of the window. Some newsgroup-related settings will appear on the right-hand side. The default settings at the bottom of the window should be fine, but make sure there is a news server listed int he the white box. If not, add one using the "Add..." button. If there are extra, erroneous servers listed, remove them using the "Delete" button. To check the properties for the news server, click the "Edit..." button and proceed to step #7.

7.  Just make sure there is a dot in the circle labeled "Only ask me for my user name and password when necessary." Then click the "OK" button and proceed to step #8.

8.  Next, back in the "Preferences" window, click the "OK" button there as well, and you will return to the Netscape Communicator program. It is now recommended that you close Netscape Communicator and restart your computer using the "Shut Down..." feature in the "Start" menu. After your computer restarts, you should be able to send and receive e-mail just fine using Netscape Communicator. For instructions on how to compose e-mail messages using Netscape Communicator, refer to the "Help" menu in Communicator.
